Can the co-op mode be played with 2 or 3 people instead of 4?

I'm so hyped for this!

This isn't exactly related to the patch but I'm thinking of supporting the DEVs through pass purchase. Unfortunately, the pass is only for 30 days and honestly I wish there is/are option(s) for me to pay more for a really long term or even permanent instead of having to repurchase every month.
